Twenty-One

Andi tied her apron and fixed her mask, using her reflection in the glass of her Jeep's passenger side door. The white half-mask sat well across her nose; there was just enough space between her nose and the material that she didn't feel like she was suffocating. The mask's straps were tight on her temples, but they kept the mask secure.

The bag from James was still sitting in her trunk, but she slid her phone into a black leather notepad that had a hole big enough for her phone's camera to peek through. There was nowhere for her to stash equipment, and nothing was going to happen at a gala with five hundred other people. She smoothed her hair one more time into her tight ponytail and walked around the back of the building to the service entrance of the hotel.

Skipping the gym today was necessary after the awkward near kiss with Declan last night. If only running from Declan could burn off all of this anxiety. Cocktail waitressing is no joke, so maybe that would do the trick. She could feel her shoulders aching just thinking about it.

The kitchen manager was shouting orders and slinging trays of food at other masked servers as Andi walked into the kitchen. Wasting no time, she took the first tray in her reach and made her way out to the party.

She smiled and worked the crowd in a circular motion, stopping occasionally for people to peruse her offerings. Slowly, she made her way through the crowd.

Everyone was in masks, but Andi trained her eyes to look for the foursome. Everyone seemed to be in little groups, so finding them would take some extra effort. She knew all of their faces now, but that meant extraordinarily little at the moment.

By her third tray of food, Andi spotted the likely targets.

The silver-headed giant rose above the rest of the guests in Andi's peripheral vision. A woman was sitting beside him in a chair with a silver toga and elaborate mask. Her ''boys'' wore silver togas and half masks that made them look more like The Phantom of the Opera than Sophocles.

Andi swung by the quartet with her hors d'oeuvres, and the boys eagerly ate half of the tray. She lingered among them as best as she could, listening for any clues.

Eight more trays of food later, Andi was getting impatient. Everyone was in masks, and nothing unseemly enough to count as evidence had happened. It was a boring social event.

She had noticed an interesting dynamic, though. There were no couples at this gala. There were many obvious parties of people. Each party seemed to have a figurehead and an assortment of accompaniments. Andi had seen as many as seven people obviously grouped together, exposed by their themed costumes and matching masks.

This is some sort of harem party. There were collaborations of women and men… some with both. A study in polyamory. If you have enough money, you can have anything.

With sore arms and feet, Andi wove herself through the crowd with her twentieth tray.
